Every so often, when I am particularly pleased with my life or my house, I remember the NCT coffee morning in my front room, where everyone lamented having to go back to work, and when I said "It's one reason we bought such a small house, we wanted to be able to manage on one salary." The response? It would be lovely, but they couldn't cope with the drop in standard of living.

I've often wondered whether they'd have said it if we'd been in one of their houses, which were all slightly more than twice the size of mine, and considerably more, um, groomed, whatever the grooming equivalent for houses is.

But then I go and sit in the garden and eat bagels again. So that's ok.

Well, one needs to consider that when women talk about their life choices around one, they are responding to more than just one's specific opinions on these issues; they are, like all of us, products of ther society, environment, upbringing, what they read in the papers etc. And sometimes a combination of all these things makes us say - or even believe - that we desire things that are not really good for us, or that are not really what we want. Or they make us speak out of one side of our mouths in public and feel quite differently inside, trying to keep up the appearances we think the world (where the world != specific interlocutor) expects of us. It's natural, it's normal, it's a heavy burden, and I think it's a little unfair to want to slap people for it.

Once again, you are referring int the general, and I, the specific.

Sometimes, people are just vain and selfish.

Just like occasionally, someone will be a murderer, thief or rapist.

People differ. Some are vain, self-centered, and selfish.

Those who are vain, self-centered and selfish, who have kids that are neglected whilst they moan about how hard they have to work (when they don't) and who go on and on about how draining it is to have kids, that they hardly ever see, whilst bemoaning that what keeps them away from their kids is the need to pay for three holidays to Dubai a year, I, personally, want to give a good slap too.

Thankfully, I don't know many of them.
