Quake!

My feet knew it was an earthquake but my mind tried to talk me out of it. It was the most peculiar feeling. Only the front of our house shook - buzzed - and the shaking stopped halfway along the length of my bed. My feet fizzled with the vibration and my hips didn't. Afterwards I heard the bookshelves and wall resettling with a plinking sound.

When I came back from asking Rob if he thought it was a quake, it was 12:59 by the radio alarm clock. Rob was in the spare room at the back of the house and hadn't noticed a thing.

The strangest thing was that the only noise was the noise of the house; there was no noise of, say, a large lorry trundling down the road.

Which is to say, despite where I now live, I have only ever felt two, in non-earthquake-prone regions, so small as to barely register. One tornado (also small), numerous blizzards. But no big earthquakes.

Was it scary at all? Or just weird?

That's so weird, I was up consoling P (bad cold) at the back of the house and didn't feel a thing! That's the second earthquake I've missed!

It woke me up! I had a moment of absolute panic that the house was falling down, and then I remembered that it's an old house and it hadn't fallen down yet so there's no reason for it to start now. I completely agree with the weirdness of not hearing traffic going past or anything. It was such a deep-feeling rumble, but without any sound attached to it.

Then I realised Glitz was awake too and one of us said "Earthquake!" and we both went, "Wow!" and then we went back to sleep.

I experienced it as a noise, but I suspect that was because I was asleep and by the time I was properly awake my brain had rationalised it that way. I wasn't sure if it was a real noise or a dreamed one until Rob said he'd heard it too.

We're a fair way from the epicentre too, so we didn't get it as strongly.
